NATO is close to deciding if it will increase the number of its troops in Afghanistan, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported May 1. Stoltenberg’s comments came during an interview with German newspaper Welt am Sonntag that was published April 30. NATO, which has around 13,000 troops in the country, will likely decide whether to increase troop levels or lengthen deployments by June, Stoltenberg said. NATO’s Resolute Support mission is aimed at training, assisting and advising Afghan forces in their battle against resurgent Taliban militants. The secretary-general’s comments came more than a month after U.S. Gen. John Nicholson, who commands NATO forces in Afghanistan, described the battle as a “stalemate” and said a few thousand more NATO troops were needed in the fight against the Taliban.
