Merkel: “The times when we could fully rely on others have passed. We Europeans must take our destiny in our hands”
Donald Trump told many people, including Environment Minister Scott Pruitt, who plans to retire from the Paris deal to counteract climate change.
This is revealed by Mike Allen’s Axios site, which is generally well informed, but warns: the president has said different things to various people, and is known to change ideas at any time.
According to Axios, the White House chief wants to dismantle Obama’s environmental policies, and he thinks that abandoning Paris is the most effective way to do it. So the G7 listened to the Europeans saying they needed more time to reflect, but in fact their position was already firm as well because it believes the climate agreement is damaging the US economy and work. Over the course of next week, he will announce this rift, which is a slap for the allies, but responds to the expectations of his electoral base, skeptical of all multilateral policies.
